PEDRO FONTANA GARCIA
Pedro Fontana got his University degree of Business Administration in 1974 at ESADE Barcelona (University Raimon Llull) and his Master of Business Administration degree at Harvard Business School, in 1976. His professional life has been mostly with the banking industry and specifically in the group BBVA. He started his carrer in Banco de Bilbao Madrid, in 1976. Two years later, I was appointed Regional Manager of Catalunya of Banco del Comercio(subsidiary of Banco Bilbao). In 1983 he was appointed as the General Manager of Banca Mas Sarda, Bank that had been acquired by Banco de Bilbao a few months earlier. In 1988 he was appointed as the General Manager of Banca Catalana after the merger of Banca Catalana and Banca Mas Sarda, but in April 1989 I left the bank to go to work for NH Hotels as CEO. In 1990 he was appointed Director General of Operations of COOB’92, the organising Committee of the Barcelona Olympic Games. During the pre-games period, he was responsible of the areas of: Accreditations, Accommodations, Olympic Villages, Press Operations, RTO (Broadcasting), Operation Units, Food & Beverage, Logistics, Transportation and Security. During the celebration of the Games he was responsible of the CPO, the main operating center of The Games. On February 1993 he was appointed General Manager of “Turisme de Barcelona”, the institution responsible of promoting and developing the tourism in the city of Barcelona. On May 1994 he came back to the banking sector. He was appointed Executive President of Banca Catalana, the biggest subsidiary of BBV in Spain. At beginning of 2000, after the merger of BBV, Argentaria and Banca Catalana he became General Director of BBVA in Catalunya, position that he holds right now. Pedro Fontana is member of the Board of different companies as Areas SA, Areamed SA, Banco de Credito Local, Catalana d’ Iniciatives SCR and Barcelona Empren SCR.
