Prioritisation: Where Should Turkey Focus Its Energies?
ALFONSO DI IANNI
Senior Vice President, Europe Enlargement, Oracle
Before I address your question which is a very interesting one let me just congratulate that Prime Minister here and the government of Turkey because it is not often that you are people at that level has been trying with private businesses in this type of debates and I think this is really honorable and as I said fairly unique and we really appreciate the opportunity to engage with the government and the local businesses being as global as we are so this is a great initiative and very much appreciated.
I want to put your question in the context of the European enlargement because that is the new business unit that I manage in Oracle and by the way on June 1st Turkey would be part of this new business unit because the evolution exciting time of the country. Why did we create this business unit, the reason is very simple to go towards 2023 or the future you need to share experience and best practices and learn from past mistakes in history, that’s what we hope that we can do adding Turkey to this new business unit. These are the 10 countries that joined Europe in May, Oracle invested in all of these countries in the last 2-3 years so there is a great potential in these emerging countries because I think what they bring to the larger world is young, dynamic people hungry for success and this is great. This is what the Polish brought to discussion and the other countries, we are very excited about that and also I think with joining EU there is a stabilizing effect in all dimensions, not just economy in the society and of course in the investment area because of course investors hopefully will be more ……..because there are laws and there are relationship among these countries things will be much easier in the future. There are more funds, let’s not forget about that coming from Brussels and if it is used appropriately they can fuel new venture, new business, they can have the entrepreneurs in Turkey as well as in other countries to bring frution their ideas and can feed the hungry young people so great set of things that the European enlargement can bring to countries and these are all experiences that we are as the eyes of the customer, government, the private businesses that we are there. So going back to your points on software and what software can do? Just 2-3 points, we talked about e-government by the way Romania saved 500.000 dollars on pequrement and as a case study they use 500.000 dollars for a sport facility for the young people so e-government like my colleague said is a great important area for investment and evolution. I was always debating with our friends from the commission that we should create a e-government academy where people can share best practices, learn from each other and advance in the efficiency of the government to other regions this is not only new countries because it’s a lot to do with your country too as you know. The other point is the for example a chip made in China for automobile shift to Malev cargo to Budapest shipped across thru lorry to Bratislava in a car that driven in France, this is the world we have already so how do we manage with software, all the connections of this new type of supply chain and when you look about the future again we all know we have few thousand websites and now as we’ve mentioned before we have the internet of the individual, you have the blug at CNN and you have mobile phone so we talk to millions and billions of people but think about internet of objects, intelligent tags that you can put on containers on fish or on machinery and you can get enormous information which will change completely the way we manage supply chain and the way we manage information so there is plenty of opportunity and great young people here, let’s talk.
Question (Ethem Sancak): Forum İstanbul’un Başkan Yardımcısıyım ve işadamıyım. Sorum diğer konuklara. Önümüzdeki yıllarda muhassır medeniyeti yakalama çabamıza destek verip, önemli bir üs haline getirecekler mi kendi şirketleri açısından ülkemizi? Bu çabamıza katkı yapacaklar mı? Üretimlerini Türkiye’de odaklamak, dünyanın başka coğrafyalarına buradan hizmet vermek. Çünkü yetkinliğimizi gördüler.
For years Oracle has invested in software groups specifically in India and that was few years ago mostly target country for a number of reasons now we have started to look at our investment in a different point and there are two things which are important, understand what is the strategy in the country in terms of developing skills, for example we are investing in mobile telephone application in Poland because there was the university there and the ministry agreement that they would continue to invest there and we have done that, that is one thing. The other one is proximity, we call it near shore centers as opposed to off shore centers, proximity to European customers is a critical advantage of many countries because of culture, because of language and because of time zones so we are reviewing this strategy on regular basis every year and as I said before we opened 4 centers in the last two and I am open to discussions.
